Preps insider: North Central wins Marion Co. title, defeats Ben Davis 48-44
Preps insider Kyle Neddenriep recaps North Central’s 48-44 Marion County title win over Ben Davis.
This week’s high school basketball Super 25, which considers all teams in the state in all classes (records through Monday):
- Fishers (14-0): Part of what makes Fishers so tough is its balance. Jason Gardner Jr. leads the team at 16.3 points per game, but after that Justin Kirby, Cooper Zachary, Millen McCartney, Nathan Baker and JonAnthony Hall are all between 8.4 and 12.5 points per game. Following wins last week over Brownsburg (77-60) and South Bend Riley (89-29), the Tigers host Avon on Friday and play at Carroll (Fort Wayne) on Saturday. Previous: 1.
- Crown Point (11-0): The Bulldogs cruised to wins over Merrillville (74-37) and Griffith (76-45) to stay unbeaten. Mason Darrell had 33 points and six assists in the win over Griffith. A visit to Chesterton on Friday should provide more of a challenge. Previous: 3.
- Greenfield-Central (11-2): The Cougars rolled to wins over New Castle (72-50) and Eastern Hancock (100-46). Up this week are home games against Shortridge (Thursday) and much-improved Shelbyville (Saturday). Braylon Mullins update: 34.5 ppg, 7.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 4.1 steals and shooting 50% from the 3-point line. Previous: 4.
- Westfield (9-1): The Shamrocks continue to impress with a 62-36 win over Hamilton Southeastern in their only game last week. Junior Drew Haffner (13.4 ppg) and seniors Durante Morton (11.2 ppg, 5.0 rebounds) and Will Harvey (9.4 ppg, 2.3 assists) lead a balanced offense. Westfield has home games this week against Brownsburg (Friday) and Muncie Central (Saturday). Previous: 9.
- Evansville Reitz (11-0): Senior Lavell Tindley (19.3 ppg, 7.6 rebounds) and sophomore Jaylan Mitchell (16.0 ppg, 11.5 rebounds, 6.4 assists) lead the Panthers, who are coming off wins over Kentucky teams Christian County (82-45) and Paducah Tilghman (71-63) in the Evansville Harrison Classic. Up next is a tough test against 9-1 New Albany on Saturday. Previous: 7.
- Lawrence North (10-3): Lawernce North saw its attempt to win back-to-back Marion County tournament titles fall short with a 59-55 loss to Ben Davis in the semifinal round. After playing Plainfield on Tuesday, the Wildcats have another tough home game on Friday vs. Marion County champ North Central. Azavier Robinson is 152 points from catching Greg Oden as the program’s all-time leading scorer. Previous: 2.
- South Bend St. Joseph (12-1): After a 96-53 win over South Bend Washington last week, the Huskies are averaging 80.4 points per game. Senior Chase Konieczny is averaging 24.5 points and 8.8 rebounds. Up next: at Penn (Friday) and vs. NorthWood (Saturday). Previous: 10.
- Guerin Catholic (13-2): Guerin solidified itself as a Class 3A state title contender with a 70-67 victory over Cathedral. Three players — Bryson Cardinal (21.4 ppg, 9.7 rebounds), Jake Grissom (13.7 ppg) and Ryne Paris (10.1 ppg, 4.5 rebounds) — are averaging in double figures for the Golden Eagles. Up next: Friday vs. Brebeuf Jesuit. Previous: 11.
- Anderson (13-1): The Indians knocked off Lafayette Jeff (63-60) and Hamilton Southeastern (65-56) to improve their winning streak to nine games. Seniors Damien King (21.3 ppg, 7.0 rebounds), Javon Warfield (12.0 ppg, 4.7 assists) and Titus Hunter (10.1 ppg, 4.7 rebounds) are leading the offense for Anderson. No games this week. Previous: 13.
- Avon (13-1): The Orioles cruised past Plainfield 65-44 in the Hendricks County tournament championship and then buried Mt. Vernon 76-46. Juniors Keriawn Berry (15.4 ppg, 5.4 rebounds) and Jedidiah Minnett (13.9 ppg, 3.2 rebounds) and senior DeAndre Lott-Hancock (12.2 ppg, 8.2 rebounds) will look to lead the Orioles to an upset win at Fishers on Friday night. Previous: 16.
- Ben Davis (12-3): The Giants knocked off Perry Meridian (75-44) , Southport (59-47) and Lawrence North (59-55) to get to the championship game of the Marion County tournament and had North Central on the ropes in the title game, leading by seven points in the fourth quarter, before falling 48-44. The good news is Ben Davis has a chance to avenge that loss on Wednesday at North Central. Tavion Williams is having solid senior, season, averaging 11.9 points and 5.8 rebounds. Previous: 8.
- Cathedral (9-4): The Irish drop a few spots after a 70-67 loss to Guerin Catholic. Cathedral has been struggling a bit from the 3-point line, including a 6-for-25 performance from the arc against Guerin. Senior Brady Koehler (13.9 ppg, 6.1 rebounds) and junior Julien Smith (13.8 ppg) lead a balanced team. Top-seeded Cathedral will open play in the City tournament on Thursday against either Bishop Chatard or Scecina. Previous: 5.
- New Palestine (11-2): The Dragons got past Pendleton Heights 59-51 in their only game last week and now have a couple more road tests this week at Roncalli (Friday) and Franklin (Saturday). There are quite a few difficult games ahead, including a visit from Lawrence North next week. Previous: 15.
- Warsaw (12-3): The Tigers won their sixth consecutive game, 62-42 at Goshen, since losing to Fort Wayne Bishop Luers in the Bob Wettig tournament in Richmond. Up next: Concord (Friday) and at Fort Wayne North Side (Saturday). Previous: NR.
- Jeffersonville (8-5): The Red Devils knocked off Floyd Central (92-54) and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 41-29 win over Providence. Tre Singleton is averaging 17.0 points and 5.3 rebounds since his return from the foot injury. Up next are games vs. Center Grove (Friday) and at Columbus East (Saturday). Previous: 17.
- Brownstown Central (11-0): The Braves vault up the list after an impressive 67-49 win over Silver Creek and an 83-43 win over Rock Creek Academy. Several players are back from last year’s 3A state title team, including 6-5 senior Chace Coomer (21.5 ppg, 4.3 rebounds), 6-3 junior Lane Pendleton (14.9 ppg, 3.6 rebounds) and 6-6 senior Colby Hall (13.3 ppg, 6.7 rebounds). Up next: at Greensburg (Friday). Previous: NR.
- Crispus Attucks (8-5): The Tigers were off last week, resting up for the City tournament. Attucks, the two-time defending champs, are seeded second and will open at home against the winner of Tech and Heritage Christian on Thursday. Previous: 18.
- Fort Wayne Wayne (10-3): The Generals have won three in a row after smashing Fort Wayne Dwenger 83-23 and Norwell 66-46 last week. Chase Barnes is averaging 16.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Wayne is at Fort Wayne Northrop on Friday and at Penn on Saturday. Previous: 23.
- North Central (9-5): The Panthers had a massive week with wins over Park Tudor (78-54), Decatur Central (72-58), Pike (76-63) and Ben Davis (48-44) to win the Marion County tournament. Seniors Papi Rivera (19.0 ppg, 3.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds) and Nijah Jewell (13.8 ppg, 3.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds) were key during the tourney run. Tough games ahead against Ben Davis on Wednesday and at Lawrence North on Friday. Previous: NR.
- Warren Central (7-5): The Warriors, who were certainly capable of making a run in the Marion County tournament, fell to Lawrence North 41-39 after a close 48-45 win over Brebeuf Jesuit in the first round. Up next: vs. Lawrence Central (Friday) and Zionsville (Saturday), both at home. Previous: 20.
- Noblesville (9-4): The Millers knocked off Zionsville 48-45 in overtime for a third consecutive win. Noblesville, which played Park Tudor on Tuesday, is at Franklin Central on Friday night. Juniors Baron Walker (15.1 ppg, 4.4 rebounds) and Justin Curry (14.5 ppg, 5.5 rebounds) lead Noblesville. Previous: 24.
- NorthWood (13-1): The Panthers took out Northridge 50-46 for a fifth consecutive win as Maddux Everingham went for 19 points. The only loss this season for NorthWood came by 12 points to Ben Davis. A showdown at South Bend St. Joseph got pushed back from Tuesday to Saturday due to weather. NorthWood hosts Goshen on Friday. Previous: NR.
- Northridge (10-2): After back-to-back losses to Warsaw and NorthWood, Northridge will look to bounce back at Mishawaka on Friday. The game at Penn scheduled for Tuesday was moved back to next week. Previous: 6.
- Mt. Vernon (9-3): Mt. Vernon was missing its interior presence against Avon with sophomore Max Vise and senior Tyler Davis out, losing 76-46. But the Marauders bounced back without them in a 72-58 win over Mooresville behind 13-for-24 shooting from the 3-point line. Up next: at Hamilton Southeastern on Saturday. Previous: 12.
- Princeton (12-1): The Tigers had a couple of close calls with a 45-44 triple overtime win over Gibson Southern and a 31-28 win over Southridge last week. Another tough test awaits at 10-2 Washington on Friday. Previous: 25.
