India will face England in the second ODI of the three-match series at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack at 1:30 pm IST on Sunday, February 9. The barren run of captain Rohit Sharma and the selection confusion that ace batter Virat Kohli’s possible return poses are the tall barriers in India’s quest for a series victory over England.
India had taken a 1-0 lead after their four-wicket victory over the visitors in Nagpur, but Kohli getting rested due to a ‘sore right knee’ had raised concerns about his fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy later this month.
Vice-captain Shubman Gill had indicated that Kohli could be back for the second game, which will be played at a venue where the latter made a match-winning 85 against the Windies in 2019.
Kohli had travelled to Cuttack along with his teammates as well and he looked relaxed and his fitness will be crucial to India’s chances not just in this series but in the Champions Trophy as well.
The Indian side will welcome that sign, but it raises a challenge in terms of selection as well. Shreyas Iyer revealed after the first ODI that he played only because Kohli didn’t.
Iyer, who came in for Kohli at the last minute by his own admission, made a rollicking 36-ball 59 that has made dropping him an almost unthinkable act.
If the past practices are followed, then Kohli will walk in for Iyer, but it might be that Yashasvi Jaiswal could be the one who will have to make for the batting icon.
For Jos Buttler’s men this would be a make-or-break game as they might look to change their downright aggressive batting approach with a much more sensible one.
The second ODI between India and England can be watched on Star Sports Network.
The live-streaming for the India National Cricket Team vs England Cricket Team Match will be available on the Disney+Hotstar App.
