Tasmanian all-rounder Beau Webster is inching closer towards a Test debut.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, selectors are weighing up bringing the 30-year-old into the Australian squad ahead of next week’s clash against India in Adelaide.

The potential inclusion comes as Mitchell Marsh battles with soreness after the series opener in Perth, but the reigning Allan Border Medallist is still expected to play.

“Has he pulled up okay? We’ll wait and see,” head coach Andrew McDonald said.

“We knew that Mitch was slightly underdone coming in, but I thought the performance in the first innings was satisfactory.”

Josh Inglis will remain in the wider squad as the backup batter but selectors are likely to stick with the same XI that was embarrassed by the visitors in Perth.

Cricket Australia haven’t confirmed Webster’s call-up at this stage.

Webster has been in red-hot form at Sheffield Shield level, topping the run-scoring charts last season and helping the Tigers pick up their first win of the year this week.

In a clash with NSW at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Webster finished with scores of 61 and 49, as well as contributing with ball in hand by taking five wickets for the match.

Tasmania defeated the Blues by 55 runs on their home turf as Webster took the final wicket of Jackson Bird in the final session of day four.
