After two years of growth, overseas purchases of quinoa decreased by -11.8% to 156 tons in 2024. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 372%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 177 tons in 2023, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, quinoa imports fell to $653K (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 258%. Imports peaked at $809K in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In 2024, Peru (120 tons) constituted the largest quinoa supplier to Qatar, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, quinoa imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (15 tons), eightfold.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Peru stood at +31.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+33.3% per year) and the United States (-7.6% per year).
In value terms, Peru ($459K) constituted the largest supplier of quinoa to Qatar, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($55K), with an 8.4% share of total imports.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Peru amounted to +18.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+57.4% per year) and the United States (-6.6% per year).
In 2024, the quinoa price stood at $4,187 per ton (CIF, Qatar), rising by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 15%. The import price peaked at $13,708 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($6,690 per ton), while the price for Italy ($3,772 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+18.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
