MUMBAI: The International Cricket Council will hold an emergent meeting of its board on Tuesday to take a final call and resolve the deadlock around the 2025 Champions Trophy in February-March next year in Pakistan. The meeting, during which a final verdict on the fate of the tournament is likely to be given, will be held virtually.
Amongst the attending members will naturally be the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has expressed its inability to send Team India to Pakistan citing lack of government permission, and the Pakistan Cricket Board, which has remained firm that it will host the entire tournament in Pakistan itself, thus ruling out the hybrid model, which would perhaps see India playing its matches in Dubai.
The impasse between the cricket boards of India and Pakistan has seen the delay of the announcement of the schedule of the 2025 Champions Trophy, which was supposed to be announced with 100 days left for the tournament.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the PCB announced the appointment of Sumair Ahmad, Chief Operating Officer of the PCB, as the Tournament Director for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said, “Sumair is an exceptionally organised professional with a wealth of administrative expertise. Coupled with his unwavering passion for cricket, I am confident he will deliver an unforgettable ICC Champions Trophy 2025 for players, officials, and fans alike. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 promises to showcase Pakistan’s ability to host world-class cricketing events, welcoming players and fans from around the globe to experience the country’s passion for the game and renowned hospitality.”
