India suffered a big blow ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the tournament due to a lower back injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Tuesday.
Bumrah struggled to regain fitness ever since he was sidelined from bowling during the fifth and final Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney last month. The Indian spearhead suffered a back spasm and could not take the field after bowling 10 overs in the first innings.
Consequently, Bumrah also missed England’s white-ball tour of India.
The 31-year-old Bumrah has been a linchpin of the Indian cricket team’s bowling attack in all forms of the game. In ODIs, he has picked 149 wickets in 89 matches at an average of 23.55 and an economy rate of 4.59.
This is the second time Bumrah will miss out on an ICC event. He was ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia due to a back injury as well.
Harshit Rana has been named as Bumrah’s replacement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India have also selected Varun Chakaravarthy with the spinner replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially named in the provisional squad.
The deadline for all teams to submit their final ICC Champions Trophy squads was February 11.
The 33-year-old Chakaravarthy has had a successful stint in white-ball cricket picking up 33 wickets in 18 matches for India in T20 cricket. His form led to his ODI debut against England in Cuttack on Sunday.
Harshit Rana, 23, has played only two ODIs but made an impact on debut when he picked three wickets against England in Nagpur earlier this month when he came on as a concussion substitute.
India will kick off their ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a highly anticipated showdown against arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23. Their final Group A fixture will be against New Zealand on March 2.
