Rohit Sharma and Arshdeep Singh, part of the Indian cricket team that won the T20 World Cup last year, earned huge honours at the ICC Awards 2024 on Saturday.
Rohit Sharma was named the captain of the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year 2024 while Arshdeep Singh won the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year 2024 award.
The winners of the ICC Awards were determined after a round of voting by the ICC Voting Academy, a larger panel of global media representatives and global cricket fans.
Arshdeep Singh, along with Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma, was also named in the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year while the ICC Women’s T20I Team of the Year 2024 included Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma.
Arshdeep Singh was instrumental in helping India end their long wait for an ICC trophy at the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the West Indies and was consistent throughout the year.
The 25-year-old left-arm pacer was India’s leading wicket-taker in T20 Internationals in 2024, picking up 36 scalps in 18 matches at an average of just 15.31 and an economy of 7.49.
Arshdeep had several memorable performances last year. At the T20 World Cup group stage against the USA, he returned with figures of 4/9 in his four overs. In the final against South Africa, Arshdeep bowled four overs for 2/20 as India defended 176.
Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, scored 378 runs in 11 matches at an average of 42.00 and a strike rate of over 160 last year. The Indian captain at the T20 World Cup, Rohit struck three half-centuries, including an explosive 92 against Australia in the Super Eight stage. He retired from T20 cricket after the World Cup.
