Foaled on March 22, 1980, at Parrish Hill Farm in Kentucky, Princess Rooney recorded 17 wins from 21 lifetime starts including five Grade 1 victories with $1.343,399 in purse earnings. Originally trained by Frank Gomez for owners Jim and Paula Tucker, she was transferred to the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale in the spring of 1984. She concluded her career at the end of that year with consecutive wins in Keeneland’s Grade 1 Spinster before capturing the inaugural running of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Hollywood Park. She would be voted that year’s Eclipse Champion Older Mare and would be inducted into horse racing’s Hall of Fame in 1991. Following her racing career, Princess Rooney was purchased in foal to Danzig by George Aubin at the 1985 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $5.5 million from the Stone Farm consignment. At the time, the third highest price ever paid for a broodmare.
