DETROIT — On Saturday night, two teams trying to write out their own Cinderella stories clash in the NFC Divisional Round, as the Detroit Lions play host to the Washington Commanders.

#5 Washington Commanders vs. #1 Detroit Lions

The 2024 season has certainly been magical for the Lions. The team set a franchise record for most wins in a single season, posting a 15-2 record to clinch the top seed in the conference. The team accomplished that with numerous key players on injured reserve, with some barely getting healthy in time for the playoffs. With this being the first time Detroit has advanced to the postseason in consecutive years for the first time since 1995, expectations are high for the team, but the Lions need to prove the regular season wasn’t a farce.

In their history, the Lions have never made it to back-to-back conference championship games.

One team that has done that before, but certainly has not done it in a long time, is Washington. This year’s Commanders team was not expected to do much with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Yet, their high-flying offense early on in the season gave them a chance to make it to the playoffs for the first time in four years. Not only did Washington accomplish that feat, but they also took down the NFC South champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round, giving the franchise its first playoff win in 19 years.

Washington has won all three playoff matchups with Detroit, including a 41-10 decimation in the conference championship game 33 years ago. The Commanders are 31-16 against the Lions all time.
