Alabama football players try to let games go after 24 hours. Whether it’s a win over No. 1 Georgia, or one of the worst losses in program history at Vanderbilt, the 24-hour rule implemented by Nick Saban remains, even under new head coach Kalen DeBoer.
By Tuesday, UA players were well into prep for Saturday’s matchup with South Carolina. While speaking to reporters, some of them revealed how they had spent the day following the 40-35 defeat in Nashville.
“It’s really important just not to overreact,” tight end Robbie Ouzts said. “At the ends of the day, that’s part of football, wins and losses. And we’re fortunate here to not have many losses, but you just, but you just gotta use it as a learning experience. You gotta go back, watch the film, see what you did right, see what you did wrong. Just correct it and then really have a growth mindset.”
Crimson Tide captain Malachi Moore likely had a more difficult day than most following the loss. His outburst at the end of the loss, where he threw his mouthpiece, kicked the ball after the officials spotted it for a Commodore kneeldown and refused to be subbed out of the game necessitated a public apology Monday.
Moore reiterated that Tuesday, and said he had spent the day after the game trying to figure out where the Tide had gone wrong.
“Anytime after a loss, the 24 hours definitely are long and rough,” Moore said. “This week is probably going to be the longest week because we’re just ready to go back out there, get on the field and compete. I really just watched the film, over and over again. Then kind of decompress from it and get away from all the negative energy.”
Some Alabama players made calls to friends and family after the loss. Offensive guard Tyler Booker chatted with some former Crimson Tide teammates, including JC Latham, Darian Dalcourt and Terrence Ferguson, who told him to keep leading the team.
Running back Justice Haynes chatted with his father, Verron Haynes, who played in the SEC at Georgia, and in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2005.
According to Justice, the elder Haynes advised him to keep his head down and work.
“He’s gone through this adversity in similar ways,” the Alabama RB said. “So just talking to him, talking to my life coach, stuff like that to try to just keep my mental right. Just staying on the right path. Continue to keep grinding, refining and competing each and every day.”
Alabama and South Carolina are scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. CT Saturday. The game will be aired on ABC.
