NORTHSTATE, Calif. — The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill that would ban transgender athletes from women’s and girl’s sports at certain institutions.
On Jan. 14, the House voted to pass the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025 in a 218 to 206 vote.
It would block transgender athletes from taking part in athletic programs for women and girls at federally funded schools and institutions, with the bill saying “sex shall be recognized solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
Matt Sharp, senior counsel with the Alliance Defending Freedom, told KRCR their team is in support of the vote, calling this event a momentous day for women.
“We’ve seen the benefit of these laws, how it has restored fairness,” Sharp said. “It has restored a fair and level playing field, and at the heart of this is the idea that everyone has a place in sports. What we’re trying to answer is, what is the most fair way to do it?”
Northstate equal rights advocate Bobbie Simpson said she has questions about the goals of the legislation.
Simpson instead wants to see more of an emphasis on subjects like education, saying she hopes the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025 does not move forward through the next stages. She feels lawmakers behind the bill are focusing on an issue that does not exist.
“There aren’t that many transgender athletes, and I don’t know who they’re trying to target,” Simpson said. “They’re spending a lot of time and money on these bills. I really feel like we should be targeting things like homelessness, healthcare. There’s a lot of other things that we could be spending our time on.”
She added, “Who are they targeting exactly? I don’t understand it. It seems pointless to me.”
Following being passed with this recent vote, the bill will next head to the Senate.
