Holiday shopping with small businesses

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – With Christmas approaching soon, some people are still buying their last few gifts.

According to Nicole Jenkins, owner of Beacon in Fondren, shopping locally is important because your money stays in your local economy.

“We’re your neighbors, so like my husband and I live in the neighborhood where we operate our business,” said Jenkins. “So, you’re shopping with someone that lives next door to you and could take that and then go and spend that in your neighborhood.”

According to some small business owners in Jackson, they see an increase in customers in the last week of November. The pace steadily picks up during the weeks leading up to Christmas.

According to the owner of Nandy’s Candy, Emmie King, customers begin to walk in the doors the week before Christmas.

“Christmas is probably our second biggest of the year,” said King. “Valentine’s is such a short volume, but Christmas is kind of, we call it more of the marathon because it really starts a lot longer [and] starts way earlier.”

Some local businesses will be open on Christmas Eve Day. Check their website or call the store for their holiday hours.
