However, concerns about his fitness remain unresolved. Shami has been recovering from ankle surgery since November 2023 and is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy.
Despite his impressive performances in domestic cricket, the Indian management has refrained from rushing his return. Rohit made it clear that Shami will only be considered for selection if the NCA provides a 100% fitness clearance.

Rohit Sharma highlighted clarity from the NCA regarding Shami’s fitness.
“I think it’s high time somebody from NCA talked about him. That’s our National Cricket Academy where he is rehabbing. Those guys are the ones who need to come up and give us some kind of update,” Rohit said, speaking to the media.
Rohit added that the team could not afford to take risks.
“There’s no way we want to take that chance unless we are 200 percent sure. The door is open, but only if the NCA clears him,” he added.

After undergoing ankle surgery, Shami has been working hard to regain his fitness. He recently declared himself available for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, showing progress.
However, the Indian team management remains cautious about his readiness for Test cricket. Shami last played for India during the ODI World Cup Final and has since impressed in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
His performances have sparked calls for his return, especially with India’s fast-bowling unit under pressure in Australia.

India’s pace attack has heavily relied on Jasprit Bumrah in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah has bowled long spells across the three Tests, with limited support from Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Harshit Rana.
Adding Shami to the lineup could provide balance and ease the workload on Bumrah. Further challenges arose after Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement, leaving another gap in India’s bowling options.
Shami’s experience and skills could help strengthen the team as they prepare for the fourth Test in Melbourne.
