SUNBURY – Although his team fell short of its ultimate goal, Newark Catholic senior golfer Brogan Sullivan closed his prep career Saturday as a two-time first-team all-state honoree.
Sullivan finished the Division III state tournament at NorthStar with a two-day total of 148 (76-72) to tie for fourth behind champion Cameron Phillips (137) of Lucasville Valley. The top five golfers earn first-team honors, while sixth through 10th are second-team all-state.
“Even though we didn’t win as a team, it’s nice to come out and win something to bring home,” Sullivan said. “It feels really good.”
After shooting a 335 on Friday, Newark Catholic turned in a 316 on Saturday and finished fourth (651) in its fifth consecutive state tournament appearance.
Warren JFK (634) repeated as state champion. Van Buren finished second (636) and Sugarcreek Garaway was third (650).
Newark Catholic was coming off back-to-back state runner-up finishes after placing third in 2021 and sixth in 2020.
“Not a whole lot of teams can say they’ve played in five consecutive state championships,” coach Phil West said. “I’m extremely proud of our guys. I wouldn’t have done anything differently.”
Junior Bobby Kiefer finished with a 166 for Newark Catholic, followed by junior Carter Hahn (171), senior Charlie Doehring (173) and sophomore Alex Nagel (175).
Sullivan, who also earned first-team all-state as a sophomore, believes he left his mark on the program.
“I helped the team get to state (tournaments) and helped with team chemistry,” he said. “I wouldn’t trade this program for any other team.”
He plans to play in college but is undecided on the school.
“I hate like heck to think about just watching Brogan play in his last high school round,” West said. “He’s been a joy to coach and watch his growth. He’s another one that got to play in four state championships and that’s rare air. I’m very happy for him.”
Central Ohio’s individual state qualifier, Centerburg senior Bennett Hill, tied for 11th with a 152 (74-78).
“For the career he had to end that way (with a 78) was rough, but hopefully time heals things a little bit,” coach Nate Altizer said. “He’ll appreciate his career once things are all said and done. Right now, it’s a bitter pill to swallow.”
Hill earned his first state berth by winning district (70) on Oct. 2 at Turnberry. He was also medalist (72) at the Denison sectional Sept. 23 and is a two-time Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
“We could rename the program after him,” Altizer said. “He has left his mark at Centerburg and hopefully he continues his career in college and has a great career in college. He can look back on this and be proud of what he ended up doing. He’s a great young man. You can’t beat that.”
