We all saw it coming, didn’t we? After a poor run of results lately, Brad Gilbert announced the end of his coaching stint with Coco Gauff. The legendary coach took to social media to make the shocking revelation which left many in the tennis world surprised. After a brilliant 2023 season which saw her win the US Open title, Gauff has won just a solitary title this year. The matters were made worse after she suffered a shocking pre-quarterfinal defeat against Emma Navarro at the US Open. With Gauff and Gilbert’s partnership coming to an abrupt end, there was a surprising name in the reckoning to become Gauff’s next coach, which was against the fans’ likening.
Coco Gauff is just 20 years old and has a long way to go in her career. As a result, Nick Kyrgios joined the bandwagon and offered to coach Gauff. Earlier this month, when there were rumors of Gilbert ending his partnership with Gauff, Kyrgios took to social media and wrote, “I’d coach her.”

Nick Kyrgios has often lauded Gauff for her exploits on the WTA Tour at such a young age. The two share a good bond and Gauff was even interviewed by Kyrgios at the Australian Open, where the two were spotted having some good laughs. Thus, Kyrgios becoming Gauff’s next coach can’t be ruled out even as fans on social media were completely against the idea.
While announcing their split, Gilbert revealed that Gauff’s future is bright and wished the young American luck for the future. However, a section of fans felt that her career would take a turn for the worse if Kyrgios joined Gauff’s team. The Australian star is infamous for stirring controversies, something which fans feel would affect Gauff’s game. As a result, one of the fans took to Twitter and strongly voiced the objection, writing, “NO NO NO HELL NO.”

Like many in the tennis community, one fan was absolutely surprised when Kyrgios offered to coach Gauff. Along with sending a ‘surprising’ GIF, the fan asked, “Who coaching him?”, as he couldn’t believe the idea of Kyrgios coaching Gauff. Lastly, one of the fans had other ideas, as the Australian star put forth his offer. The fan suggested that anybody but Kyrgios would suit Gauff in the coaching role, “anybody but him”.
Meanwhile, after splitting with Gauff, Brad Gilbert hinted that he is ready to take the ‘next step’ in his coaching career. Having previously worked with the likes of Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick apart from Gauff, he boasts a strong CV and it’ll be interesting to see whose team he will join next.
