Senior England batter Joe Root showered praise on Harry Brook after Day 4 of the Multan Test match. Batting on Thursday, October 10, Root and Brook completed a partnership of 454 runs, England’s highest in Test history. Speaking after the day’s play Root said that he was shocked by Brook’s maturity at the crease.

Harry Brook batted for 322 balls in the first innings of the Multan Test match and scored 317 runs. This was the first triple century scored in Test cricket since 2019. David Warner scored the last triple hundred in Test cricket, against Pakistan in November 2019 at Adelaide.

Root lauded Brook by saying that the player showed incredible maturity, which came as a shock to given, given Brook’s lack of common sense outside of cricketing matters.

“I knew how good he [Brook] was going to be. It was just a case of when he was going to figure it out,” Root tokd Sky Sports after Day 4.

“The pace in which he’s matured into the player that he is, is probably the one thing that has shocked me. But at the same time, it hasn’t because of his work ethic, the way that he looks at the game,” he further added.

Root concluded his assessment with a hilarious jibe at Brook.

“For someone with so little common sense outside of cricket, the intelligence that he has when he’s got a bat in his hand and the understanding of different scenarios and his own game, is quite contrasting,” Root said.

The Root-Brook partnership put England in a commanding position despite conceding 556 runs in the first innings of the match. England scored 823/7d, the fourth highest innings total in the history of Test cricket.

“Batting with Brooky. He’s a character. Sometimes he makes you laugh without even trying. It’s good fun. We’ve batted a lot together over the years for Yorkshire and England,” Root said about batting with Brook.

At the time of writing, England were on the cusp of victory, having taken 7 of Pakistan’s wickets in the second innings. Pakistan were reeling at 191/7, still trailing by 76 runs and had Aamir Jamal and Shaheen Afridi in the crease.
