The Hancock baseball team (1-1) opened its 2024-25 season with a split at Visalia-based College of the Sequoias (1-1). The home-standing Giants won 7-4 Friday. The Bulldogs, down 7-2 to start the seventh inning, won 10-9 Saturday on a Colin Johnston sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth.
At press time, Hancock was to play Long Beach Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Bulldogs’ home opener.
Johnston and Braden Oliver had three RBIs apiece for Hancock Saturday. Closer Hunter Beck (1-0) notched the win. Beck gave up two runs, both earned, on four hits in two innings pitched. He struck out three batters and walked two.
The Giants went back ahead, 9-8, on two runs off Beck in the bottom of the eighth after the Bulldogs had gone ahead 8-3 with five runs in the top of the eighth. Cesar Garcia tripled home Josue Garcia to tie it for the Bulldogs in the top of the ninth. Hancock went ahead 10-9 when Mason Aaron scored on the Johnston sacrifice fly to left field.
Beck shut out COS in the bottom of the ninth to nail down Hancock’s first win of the year.
Josue Garcia went 3-for-4 with two RBIS Friday. Richie Robles hit a two-run home run for Hancock.
COS starter Tyson Kilbreath pitched five innings to get the win, allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits. Evan Chavez (0-1), the second Hancock pitcher, took the loss. Chavez gave up two runs, both earned on two hits in his 0.2 innings.
