Mario Gutiérrez, who suffered minor injuries in a spill Saturday during the
Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes, took off his only mount Sunday at Santa Anita, his
agent confirmed.
“He is off just today,” Mike Ciaini said in a text message
to Horse Racing Nation.
Katonah closes from last to win San Pasqual.
Gutiérrez had been scheduled to ride 15-1 morning-line long
shot Skyquist for trainer Patrick Gallagher in the 10th race, a maiden special
weight for 3-year-olds going a mile on the turf.
Gutiérrez experienced some knee pain but otherwise was “all
good,” Ciani said, after 5-year-old horse Dont Fight the Fed broke down with
three furlongs left in the 1 1/8-mile San Pasqual. FanDuel TV subsequently
reported the Reddam Racing homebred son of Nyquist who was trained by Antonio
García was euthanized.
Dont Fight the Fed, who was a 45-1 long shot in the San
Pasqual, had a record of 15: 3-4-1 with earnings of $208,830. With Gutiérrez
riding, he won at 3-1 odds Dec. 27 in a one-mile turf allowance at Santa Anita.
Gutiérrez has a record of 22: 4-0-3 during the current meet
that started Dec. 26 at Santa Anita.
Katonah closed from last place in the field of seven older
horses to win the $200,000 San Pasqual.
