WAUKESHA – Drew Gaerthofner led a strong day for the Neenah boys swim team at the Division 1 state meet at Waukesha South High School.
Gaerthofner finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.29 seconds. The event was won by Caden Van Buren of Middleton in 20.24 seconds.
He also finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 54.37 seconds. Sam Wolf of Middleton won the event with a time of 53.07 seconds, which broke the Division 1 state meet record.
Gaerthofner also swam on two Neenah relays that placed in the top five.
The 200 medley relay team took fourth place in 1:33.96 with the team of Gaerthofner, Tanner Trustem, Julian Kuehn and Burke Wendell. The same four swimmers also placd fifth in the 200 freestyle in 1:25.98.
Trustem placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 57.62 seconds.
Tyler VanGompel of the Valley Swim Team co-op placed eighth in the 100 butterfly in 50.33 seconds and ninth in the 200 individual medley in 1:53.61.
Neenah placed ninth in the team standings with 113 points.
Owen Schmitz of Appleton North/East finished ninth in diving with a score of 309.80.
Bay Port’s top finisher was Griffin Schilz, who placed 10th in the 500 freestyle in 4:46.73.
Middleton won the team title with 273 points. Verona Area was second with 175.
