GRAND FORKS — There was not a Grand Forks team in the North Dakota state boys tennis team final Thursday night.
It was the first time since 1993 that happened.
But Grand Forks players got some redemption Friday.
Three of the four semifinalists at the state singles tournament are from Grand Forks — Central’s Cole Wilber and Red River’s Julian Mallory and Aodh Murphy.
All of them won a pair of matches in straight sets to reach the semifinals.
Wilber, who is aiming to repeat as state singles champion, topped Bismarck High’s Reed Romsaas 6-0, 6-0 and Bismarck Legacy’s Connor Svihovec 6-3, 6-0 to advance. He will meet Mallory at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Wilber and Mallory played last week in the East Region semifinal, too. Wilber won a highly competitive match 7-5, 6-2 en route to the title.
Mallory advanced by beating Bismarck Legacy’s Declan Hosek 6-0, 6-1 and Mandan’s Jared Christen 6-4, 6-2.
On the other side of the draw, Red River’s top player, Murphy, beat Minot’s Nolan Moore 6-2, 6-0 and Mandan’s Ryan Bitz 6-2, 6-2. Murphy will meet West Region singles champion, Karter Hatzenbuhler of Mandan, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The doubles tournament contained one big surprise from the East.
Fargo North’s Drew Burris and Nicholas Webb, who finished fifth in the East Region, unexpectedly reached the state semifinals.
Burris and Webb snuck past Jamestown’s Luke LeFevre and Braxton Burkett 1-6, 6-0, 10-7 in the first round, then upset East Region doubles champions Asher Green and Rylan Bydal of Red River 6-2, 7-6 (3) in the quarterfinals.
Burris and Webb will take on Bismarck Legacy’s Caleb Johnson and Cooper Moore at 11 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals. West Region champion Aidan Diehl and Grayson Schaeffer of Minot will play West Fargo Sheyenne’s Brandt Aslakson and Andrew Rexin in the other semifinal.
Aslakson and Rexin
