A: The Masters Tournament was founded on March 22, 1934 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta,
Georgia. The tournament was originally called the “Augusta National Invitational” for the first five years.
Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts organized the first event, with Jones helping to design the course alongside British architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Jones’s popularity in the game helped attract many of golf’s biggest stars to the Masters, including Horton Smith, who won the inaugural tournament.
