PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A driver of a golf cart is in the hospital with serious injuries after his involvement in a car crash.

According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, officers responded to the crash at around 7:35 p.m. near Southwest Town Park Ave and Southwest Tradition Parkway after receiving reports of car and golf cart crash.

Through the department’s investigation, it found that a white car and a golf cart were both traveling southbound through a gate when the golf cart suddenly tried to merge in front of the car, police say.

The attempted merge led to the golf cart clipping the front of the car, which caused the golf cart to lose control, clip the curb and eject the driver.

The driver of the golf cart had sustained serious head trauma and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital, police say.

Police say at this time the entrance to Town Park was temporarily shut down. Drivers are asked to seek alternative routes.
