One of the most unique destination properties in golf — the 9-hole Sweetens Cove Golf Club in Tennessee that’s gained somewhat of a cult following — is expanding.
While the existing course isn’t building out to 18, Sweetens Cove is adding a par-3 short course along with a host of other amenities to draw in traveling golfers from around the world: stay-and-play cabins, a restaurant and distillery, a putting green, fishing dock, and skeet shooting range.
The original architects of the beloved 9-hole course, Rob Collins and Tad King, are returning to the property 30 miles west of Chattanooga to design the new short course. Collins, part of the team that’s also behind Landmand in Nebraska, said the Par 3 course will offer flexibility and creativity.
“It’s not just a regular short course—you can play each hole in multiple ways, adding a ‘cross-country’ style that you won’t find anywhere else,” said Collins.
The overall expansion plans are spearheaded by Reef Capital Partners, an investment and development company whose golf projects include a couple of high-profile Utah facilities: Black Desert Resort, which brought a PGA Tour event back to the state for the first time in six decades, and the Tiger Woods-designed Marcella at Deer Valley.
Reef Capital partnered with Sweetens Cove to enhance the guest experience at the facility, which has been named among the top 9-hole courses in the country and has become well-known for not only its distinctive design, but it’s no-tee-time policy.
Sweetens Cove instead issues 45 to 60 day passes that allow visiting golfers the freedom to enjoy as much play as they want at a course General Manager Matt Adamski calls a “ golf anomaly” and a “giant adult playground,” with no dress code and no pressure. The golf day passes are akin to a lift ticket at a ski resort that affords skiers an opportunity to enjoy as many runs as they want over the course of a day.
Sweetens Cove, which is sold out through the end of the year, will maintain the daily pass model with the expansion.
“Sweetens Cove grabs you the moment you step onto the course—there’s an energy here that you won’t find anywhere else,” said Reef Capital Partners CEO Jared Lucero. “It’s not just about golf. It’s about the experience, the people and the simplicity of spending a day out here.
“We aim to preserve that unique charm while adding a place to stay, a bit more to do, including Sweetens at Night, and some amazing food and drinks,” added Lucero. “Those things will only make every visit even more memorable, whether you’re playing the course for the first time or the hundredth.”
Since opening in 2015, Sweetens has become popular with groups of golfers who make the golf pilgrimage to Tennessee to experience the quirky and strategic inland links-style layout — often repeating holes or skipping around the routing as they desire.
“It’s all about maximizing fun, enjoying the people you came with and playing the most golf you’ve ever played in one day,” said Adamski, who once played 254 holes at Sweetens Cove in a single day. “Our design caters to everyone. Novices love it because it’s welcoming and informal, while purists appreciate the brilliance of the course’s architecture.”
One of the traditions at Sweetens Cove is for players to enjoy a shot of whiskey before taking their first golf shot on the course. The facility has its own brand, Sweetens Cove Whiskey, and that will be enhanced with the addition of an on-site small batch distillery and bottle shop that will feature unique blends and exclusive tastings.
A timeline for the expansion project hasn’t yet been released.
