Georgia football: What positions could Bulldogs target during spring portal period
Georgia football dipped into the transfer portal after the 2024 season to add six players to its roster.
The Bulldogs additions included wide receivers Zachariah Branch from Southern Cal and Noah Thomas from Texas A&M, as well as defensive backs Adrian Maddox from UAB and Jaden Harris from Miami.
Georgia did not add any players on Signing Day in February, but the spring transfer portal window —which runs April 16-25 — offers another opportunity for coaches to bolster their talent after assessing what they have during spring practices.
Georgia added two of its nine scholarship transfers in 2024 in the spring window: quarterback Jaden Rashada and defensive back Collin Gill.
Gill played one game last season. He landed at Charlotte out of the portal.
Rashada did not play for the Bulldogs. He has yet to transfer to another school.
Here are three areas Georgia is most likely to take a look in the spring portal window:
Running back
Trevor Etienne declaring for the NFL Draft leaves the Bulldogs with rising sophomore Nate Frazier as the featured back at a position where the Bulldogs also return Cash Jones and hope to get Branson Robinson and Roderick Robinson back from injuries. Georgia needs Chauncey Bowens and Dwight Phillips to take the next step as sophomores and freshman Bo Walker will have a chance to impress.
Edge rusher
Damon Wilson was in line for an expanded role on a Georgia defense that lost Mykel Williams, Jalon Walker, Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins and Chaz Chambliss, but he transferred to Missouri after two seasons in Athens. Quintavius Johnson, a sophomore from Atlanta, could emerge and Gabe Harris also will factor in. Five-star Isaiah Gibson from Warner Robbins leads the next wave.
Quarterback
Gunner Stockton could get a push from sophomore Ryan Puglisi for the starting job, but if there is an experienced quarterback in the portal after spring practices that could be a factor, Georgia could try to add another QB like it did Rashada last spring. Freshman Ryan Montgomery is coming off a knee injury and the other early enrollee quarterback is three-star Hezekiah Millender from Clarke Central.
