Georgia football continues to make headlines in the college football world, especially when it comes to the transfer portal. Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs received a commitment from one of the top players in the portal in USC wide receiver Zachariah Branch on Sunday, but there wasn’t much time to celebrate that commitment.
With as crazy as things are in the transfer portal nowadays, it was likely just a matter of time until the Branch comittment became old news. And unfortunately that happened late Monday afternoon when an elite defender for Georgia shockingly announced that he is entering the transfer portal.
Hayes Fawcett with On3 has reported that Georgia outside linebacker Damon Wilson has officially entered the transfer portal. This news is a huge surprise based simply on the fact that absolutely no one saw this coming.
Wilson is coming off his second season with the Bulldogs where he recorded 22 tackles which included three sacks. He also tallied two forced fumbles as well as two fumble recoveries.
As you can see, Wilson was a very solid player for Georgia this season, but he was not one of the stars of their defense. However, that was likely to change next season as he projected to be a full time starter and one of the biggest contributors to this defense. So that fact alone makes this loss arguably the biggest loss of the offseason so far for Georgia.
Thankfully the offseason has just begun so Smart and his staff have plenty of time to work the portal themselves and recruit a replacement for Wilson. But even if Georgia does find a good replacement, there is no sugarcoating how big of a loss this is. But who knows, maybe Smart and his staff will be able to convince Wilson to withdraw his name from the portal and remain with Georgia.
