GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KWCH) – The Garden City Community College football team, ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA, will go from 6-1 to winless due to an ineligible player. The college’s athletic department announced that the football program must forfeit six games, all of its regular season victories to date.
In a news release, the college did not identify the players deemed ineligible but further explained what it said led to the forfeiture of wins.
“First and foremost, we completed a thorough eligibility check on the student-athlete in question prior to the start of the season,” Garden City CC Director of Athletics Mike Pilosof said in a statement. “All processes and procedures were followed for the letter of the law by the standards set forth by the NJCAA. However, it was discovered that information was not disclosed to Garden City Community College. Once we were made aware of the situation, our athletic department immediately contacted the national office.”
The NJCAA’s ruling means that Garden City has to vacate wins over Dodge City, Coffeyville, Ellsworth, Community Christian, Independence, and Butler. The college said its football team will play out the remainder of its schedule, starting in a home game against second-ranked Iowa Western, set to kick off at 11 a.m. Saturday at Broncbuster Stadium.
