CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Gannon women’s golf team was in sixth place among 15 teams after the opening day of the UC Golden Eagle Fall Invitational on Monday.
Gannon senior Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) and junior Emily Donahue (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) were tied for fourth individually among a field of 87 golfers as Gannon finished with a team score of 327. That put the Golden Knights 16 shots behind leader Barton College through the first day of the two-day tournament.
“Today, wasn’t our best effort; we made too many mistakes,” Gannon Director of Golf Scott Stano said. “We worked on our issues following today’s round. Everyone was disappointed, but tomorrow is a new day and we are excited for the opportunity to get back out on the course.”
Martinez and Donahue both shot an 8-over-par 78 on the difficult Berry Hills Country Club par-70 layout. Martinez carded a 40 on the front nine and 38 on the back, while Donahue shot identical 39s on both nines.
Freshman Alexandria LeCureux (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) used back-to-back birdies to shoot a 10-over 80 to move into a tie for 13th place. She carded a 37 on the back nine.
Gannon’s No. 1 player, senior Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole), shot 83 (42-41) and moved into a tie for 27th place. She was followed by sophomore Victoria Colmenares (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/ICL Academy) (40-46-86), freshman Gunnhildur Gunnarsdóttir (44-44-88), and sophomore Jillian Gambino (Mayfield Village, Ohio/Mayfield) (45-45-90). Donahue and Gambino played as individuals in the round.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Friday as Gannon golfers are set to begin play at 8:30 a.m.
