With the newness beginning to wane on a Wilmington development, another component finally made its grand opening.
According to an article in the Jan. 12, 2005, StarNews, a 16-screen cinema opened at Mayfaire Town Center. Known as Mayfaire Cinemas, the first movies were shown nearly a year after the center’s first shops opened.
One of its welcomed features was stadium seating, which ensured an unobstructed view of the screen. It marked the third movie theater in New Hanover County, joining ones off Market Street and Oleander Drive in Wilmington and Carolina Beach.
Some of the movies premiering at Mayfaire included “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” and “House of Flying Daggers.” Prices were as much as 50 cents to $1 more for adults, students, seniors, children and matinees compared to the Carmike Cinemas.
Mayfaire Cinemas is one of two multiplex theaters remaining in Wilmington. The other is The Pointe at Barclay.
