FORT MYERS, Fla. – Four Florida Gulf Coast University men’s golfers earned Cobalt Golf Scholar All-American honors Thursday. Seniors Austin Cherichella, Joseph Sullivan, Evan Thompson and Matt Millar were each awarded the title.
“I’m really proud of our seniors this past year,” head coach Andrew Danna said. “This is a testament to all their hard work in the classroom.”
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must maintain a 3.2 or higher GPA for the academic year, be a sophomore or older, have stroke average under 76.0 and compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s tournaments.
Sullivan broke three single-season school records in 2023-34. He competed in 13 tournaments, en route to Atlantic Sun Conference Second Team and ASUN All-Tournament distinction. He broke the single-season program record for total rounds played at 39. Sullivan also set the single-season school record for scoring average, 70.7, and for par or better rounds with 23.
He earned an individual at-large bid to the Austin Regional, finishing 25th overall to wrap up one of the best-ever Eagle careers. Sullivan won the inaugural Valero Texas collegiate, earning an exemption into the PGA’s Valero Texas Open. He also forced a three-way playoff at the ASUN Championship. In the classroom, he boasted a 3.70 GPA.
Cherichella, an ASUN Third Team and All-Academic Team honoree with a 3.74 GPA, competed in 12 tournaments. His 71.8 scoring average during 2023-24 marked the fifth-lowest in program history. He posted two top three, one top five and one top 15 finish throughout the course of the year. Cherichella produced a medalist performance at the Badger Invitational, finishing seven-under par helping lift FGCU to a team title.
Millar competed in 12 tournaments for the Eagles, amassing a 71.9 scoring average for sixth-lowest in program history. He had two top 15, one top 20 and three top-25 efforts on the year. Millar notched a season-best 13th-place finish at the Auburn Tiger Invitational. In the classroom, Millar held a 3.93 GPA, the highest of the four Eagles to be honored.
Thompson, a 3.70 GPA holder, played in six tournaments – totaling 18 rounds. His 73.9 scoring average helped him achieve one top-15 finish, a season-best 12th-place effort at the ASUN Championship.
