BAHRAIN (WRDW/WAGT) – Former USC Aiken golfer Brandon Robinson-Thomson came close to achieving DP World History Thursday, but settled for an individual record.
Robinson-Thompson carded a 61 in the opening round, taking a three-shot lead at the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship.
His 11 under is a career best.
His first double-digit score under par in professional competition, setting a course record in the process at the Royal GC in Bahrain.
The former Pacer had a front nine 29, comprising of two eagles and three birdies.
He flirted with a DP circuit record, almost becoming the second to meet Oliver Fisher’s 59 in 2018.
Robinson-Thomson needed a birdie on the 18th hole to get it, but it fell just short of the mark.
“I didn’t really picture it this morning when it was raining and it was forecasted as super strong winds so I’m very happy to get off to the start I did and a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth not gonna lie but I hold my fair share, so it was just an accumulation of a lot of good decision making and execution,” said Robinson-Thompson.
