The Brooklyn Nets are getting ready for training camp to begin later this month as they embark on the first year of their current rebuild to find their next superstar. Brooklyn fully committed itself to a full rebuild earlier this summer when they traded Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks and a former NBA veteran had some good things to say about Bridges.
In an interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of Scoop B Radio, former NBA point guard Mike Bibby was able to talk about a number of topics, including what the Bridges trade means for the Knicks. As part of his opinion on the situation, Bibby gave Bridges props for what he did in his role in Brooklyn.
“You see he was great in Brooklyn,” Bibby said of Bridges. “He was the number one option in Brooklyn. When you come to a new team and you’re not the number one option no more, you have to see how guys are going to play out in that situation.”
Bridges’ two seasons with the Nets is something that plenty of Nets fans seem divided on while most of the NBA public outside of Brooklyn believes that he did the best that anyone could have asked of him given the circumstances. To be fair, Bridges had an uneven tenure in Brooklyn and it’s safe to say that the 2023-24 season was a disappointment for all parties involved.
When Bridges came to the Nets midway through the 2022-23 season as a result of the Kevin Durant trade, he showed that he was capable of more than what he showed with the Phoenix Suns as he averaged 26.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 47.5% from the field and 37.6% from behind the three-point line.
However, for the 2023-24 season, when there was a significant amount of NBA media that believed that Bridges could make his first All-Star game, his numbers regressed to the tune of 19.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 43.6% from the floor and 37.2% from deep.
