Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on facing teams like the Celtics: ‘That what I wake up for’
A former Boston Celtics player is currently under government investigation.
Terry Rozier, an ex-Celtics guard who now plays for the Miami Heat, allegedly altered how he played in a 2023 game as part of an illegal sports gambling scheme. The incident is part of a larger investigation into a gambling ring associated with former Raptors forward Jontay Porter, who was permanently banned from the NBA last April.
While the NBA did not find a violation of NBA rules by Rozier in their initial investigation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York is now looking into the matter.
Here are the details on the case against the former Celtic.
The game in question is a March 2023 matchup between the New Orleans Pelicans and Rozier’s team at the time, the Charlotte Hornets.
Before the game started, Rozier had no injuries, averaging 35.3 minutes and 21.1 points per game that season. While he started the game like normal, he exited the court for discomfort in his right foot after only nine minutes, ending the game with five points, four rebounds and two assists – totals much lower than his usual performance.
Gambling firm U.S. Integrity reports that for the same game, multiple bets were placed on Rozier failing to meet his typical number of points or rebounds. U.S. Integrity alerted the NBA and sportsbooks of the suspicious wagers, leading to Rozier’s investigation.
So far, Rozier has not been formally accused of a crime or wrongdoing. The investigation remains ongoing.
