Henson broke the news to RG.org and spoke on the decision to finally call it quits after four years of not playing in the NBA.
“It’s been fun. It’s like a journey, man. Every year, there’s new opportunities,” Henson told RG.org. “Just like basketball, you’ve got to work hard, stay down, be prepared and meet the right people, know the right people, treat people the right way and it’ll progress forward for you.”
Henson has since taken up a career in broadcasting.
“The money is good, it pays some bills. I also stay busy. So I’m just trying to grow in that space and see where it takes me.”
The Bucks drafted Henson with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. Henson attended North Carolina, where he had a solid college career. Henson was named a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-ACC in 2012, Second-Team All-ACC in 2011, and a two-time ACC All-Defensive Team.
Henson played the majority of his career in Milwaukee from 2012-18. In seven seasons in Milwaukee, Henson averaged 7.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 53.9 percent from the field and 57.2 percent from the free throw line in 405 games and 152 starts.
While he was known for his prowess on the hardwood, Henson was a victim of racial profiling back in 2015. Henson alleged he was a victim of racial profiling at a Milwaukee area jewelry store. The 33-year-old was allegedly denied entry in response to an alert they received from the Whitefish Bay police, and the incident was a misunderstanding over Henson’s vehicle.
After seven seasons in Milwaukee and a handful of injuries, Henson was traded, along with Matthew Dellavedova and a Bucks 2021 first- and second-round pick, to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a five-player, three-team deal. In his time in Cleveland, he averaged 5.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 29 games and two starts.
Henson last played in the NBA in 20220 for the Detroit Pistons. He was traded from Cleveland to Detroit along with Brandon Knight and a 2023 second-round pick in exchange for Andre Drummond.
Since his NBA days concluded, Henson has entertained a couple of different propositions. The Washington Wizards asked him about being a front-bench assistant coach for their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, and a player development associate for the NBA team.
