Another member of the 2017 national championship Florida Gators baseball team is returning to Gainesville this season as a member of Kevin O’Sullivan’s coaching staff.
Joining former teammate and director of player development Mike Rivera is Florida all-time saves leader Michael Byrne. O’Sullivan made the addition official on Wednesday.
“We are thrilled to bring Michael back to the Gators as part of our coaching staff for the 2025 season,” O’Sullivan said. “Michael bolsters our staff by providing yet another experienced resource for our developing young pitchers. He has been a part of a National Championship roster and knows what it takes to excel at the very highest level of our game.”
Byrne is close to Florida royalty, at least on the diamond. The starters and position players get all of the love, but it’s a rare thing in baseball to find a dominant closer. Byrne left Florida as the saves king, with 35 for his career and a program-record 19 in one season. He finished two seasons with a sub-2.00 earned run average and struck out 172 to just 23 walks over 88 over 153 innings. The NCBWA named him the Stopper of the Year in 2018 and he also earned a First Team All-American nod as a junior.
He elected free agency in November after six and half years with the Cincinnati Reds organization. He last pitched for the Triple-A Louisville Bats before hitting the injured list in September. Over 261.1 innings as a minor league reliever, Byrne holds a 19-15 record and a 3.62 earned run average. He hopes to continue his professional career after rehabbing.
“I am both honored and excited to be back in Orange & Blue in this new role,” Byrne said. “Thank you to Sully for the opportunity to be a part of the staff, and I am looking forward to adding value to the organization in any way I can, both on and off the field.”
Byrne has already done what this Gators team is hoping to do, climb to the top of the mountain. He made it to Omaha three times in four years with Florida, so he knows the difference between finishing the job and coming up short.
The Gators begin the 2025 season with a home series against Air Force, starting Friday, Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. ET
