Just a few weeks after leaving the Washington Huskies for the defensive coordinator role at Jacksonville State, former UW safeties coach Vinnie Sunseri appears to be in the market for a change of scenery once again.
According to multiple reports, Sunseri interviewed with Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier and, if hired, is expected to take over as the team’s safeties coach. Napier is looking to make multiple additions to his staff after defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong, who held the position for two seasons, departed for the same role on Houston’s coaching staff.
“Vinnie is one of the brightest young coaches in the country,” Jacksonville State head coach Charles Kelly said in a release. “He brings unparalleled energy, a wealth of football knowledge, and a relentless commitment to excellence. His experience as both a player and coach at the highest levels of the game makes him the perfect fit to lead our defense to new heights. We can’t wait to see the impact he’ll have on our program.”
The former Alabama safety has seen a quick rise in the coaching world after starting his career as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban, before spending four seasons with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, three as the team’s running backs coach. Then, he made the move to Montlake for the 2024 season, his first as a position coach on the defensive side of the ball before heading back to the South.
