With the new year in full swing, some students are taking advantage of the University of Oregon Student Recreation Center, and fitness resolutions may have to do with the large influx of people.
“Being back since the first week of class, it (the Rec) is ridiculously busier,” Mia Evans, a freshman, said.
Responses from a poll on one of our campus reporter’s personal Instagram showed that 69% of respondents did make a New Years resolution regarding fitness in some way compared to the 31% who said they did not make a fitness related resolution.
“Yes, I believe that the Rec has become busier compared to last term due to New Year’s (resolutions),” Nathan Padilla, a sophomore UO student, said.
According to both UO freshman Kennedy Salazar and student staff, this increased attendance affects both students and Rec employees, adding to the workload of employees and availability of equipment.
“The treadmills are always taken,” Salazar said.
Mia Ferreira, a student employee at the Rec, responded to the poll saying that increased attendance has “made it slightly more difficult to enforce policies in the Rec since newcomers aren’t used to (these policies and equipment).”
According to Bleu Jones, another student employee at the Rec, as the year progresses, it is likely to see attendance decrease as students struggle to maintain their initial momentum and balance fitness goals with their academic and personal commitments.
“Yeah it definitely picks up at the beginning of the year but it usually always slows down by February,” Jones said.
