Two days after longtime Board of Health member Helaine Hazlett announced that she will not run for re-election this June, Kim Crowley stepped forward to declare her candidacy. Crowley owns Lighthouse Fitness on Front Street and teaches classes at the Council on Aging. She sent the following statement to the Current:
“I love this town of Marblehead, that I first made my home almost 30 years ago. I find real joy in being a part of the chain that makes Marbleheaders healthy and happy. I want to offer my expertise and passions and become a member of our Board of Health.
“My business, my goals are focused on making people feel good. As a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor, I’ve dedicated myself to learning as much as I can about the body and how to translate that to others so they can prevent and manage disease, strengthen their bodies, and enjoy a fuller life. I have significant experience with all ages and abilities, including those with chronic illness and special needs.
“I am excited about the transparency coming out of the current Board of Health. Progress has been made getting the Transfer Station project back on track. The focus made on mental health is critical these days, and the board is doing a great job addressing it. Getting overdose kits accessible has been another achievement. I was also honored to be a part of the first Wellness Fair this year. It was great to see so many local, health-based businesses collaborate and share their work with the community.
“One of my daughters asked me why I’d like to run for the Board of Health. I would love to challenge myself and try something new. I’m a problem solver and I make things happen. I’m up front and I’m fair. I started in the fitness industry over 15 years ago, with leadership roles at the Lynch/ van Otterloo YMCA. I opened my independent small business, learning how to budget and be fiscally responsible, managing time and keeping to my mission. I found new avenues to propel my business through adversity during the COVID pandemic. I know that I’ve got essential skills to bring to the table, and I have an incredible work ethic I will employ as well.
“There’s also more to do in our town. I’d love to see more people in town CPR trained and investigate grants to get more AEDs. I’d also like to get more kids moving and healthy, exploring initiatives to make team sports affordable and taking a look at our school lunch options.
“I would be grateful to our Marblehead community’s support in my run for Board of Health.”
Hazlett served 28 years on the Board of Health. Whoever fills her seat will serve with Dr. Tom Massaro and Tom McMahon.
Candidates for several town boards and committees can pull election papers on March 17. The election will happen June 20.
