When it comes to route-going, dirt-running 3-year-olds, Saturday
at Parx Racing will be the last chance they get to face one another in Grade 1 company
this side of the Breeders’ Cup.
The cachet of the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby will be
topped only by horse-of-the-year candidate Thorpedo Anna’s last intra-divisional
turn against 3-year-old fillies in the $1 million Cotillion.
Gulfstream Park makes a cameo appearance on the late-summer,
graded-stakes stage when it hosts the Princess Rooney (G3) sprint for fillies
and mares, the only Breeders’ Cup win-and-you’re-in race anywhere this week.
Five other graded stakes happen Saturday at Parx, Belmont at
Aqueduct and Churchill Downs. They will be preceded Friday by the biggest race
of the year to be run on the synthetic course in Erie, Pa.

This is like a homecoming game for Roses for Debra. Bred at
Blackstone Farm in Pennsylvania, she returns to the track where she broke her
maiden on second asking in 2022. Now 5, the daughter of Liam’s Map graduated
from her 3-for-4 start on the Tapeta course to become a two-time
graded-stakes-winning turf sprinter for trainer Christophe Clément. Roses for
Debra has been favored in all three of her races this year. Since winning the
Giant’s Causeway (G3) in April at Keeneland, she finished second in the Intercontinental
(G2) and third in the listed Smart N Fancy, losing both those Saratoga stakes
to Future Is Now.

Pennsylvania Derby (G1), Parx, 1 1/8 miles, 3-year-olds
Preakness winner Seize the Grey could be the second Penn
Derby winner for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who turned 89 two weeks ago. The Hall
of Fame icon won in 2013 with Will Take Charge. Since that classic triumph at
Pimlico, the Arrogate colt has finished seventh in the Belmont Stakes and
fourth in the Jim Dandy (G2). Stronghold also brings Grade 1 bona fides into
this race, having won the Santa Anita Derby five months ago for trainer Phil D’Amato.
The son of Ghostzapper finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby and second
in the Indiana Derby (G3).

Cotillion (G1), Parx, 1 1/16 miles, 3-year-old fillies
After a narrow loss to 2023 division champion Fierceness last
month in an indelible running of the Travers (G1), three-time Grade 1 winner Thorpedo
Anna will not be facing colts and geldings this weekend. Trainer Kenny McPeek
said there are a million green-colored reasons to run her only against fillies
this week. This will be her last step before facing older fillies and mares
Nov. 2 in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Power Squeeze comes in off last month’s victory
in the Alabama (G1), which Thorpedo Anna skipped for the Travers. With Javier
Castellano injured, Parx’s top jockey Mychal Sánchez will ride Power Squeeze. Trainer
Todd Pletcher decided not to enter Alabama runner-up Candied, according to the track racing office. She may go next
against older competition in the Spinster (G1) on Oct. 6 at Keeneland.

Gallant Bob (G2), Parx, 6 furlongs, 3-year-olds
Bentornato will make only his second start since he finished
third in the one-mile Saudi Derby (G3). Coming back from six months on trainer José
D’Angelo’s bench, the Valiant Minister colt placed second to Valentine Candy as
the 8-5 favorite last month in the seven-furlong Robert Hilton Memorial at
Charles Town. He cuts back to a distance at which he is 2-for-2 with both wins
coming last summer in minor stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Greenwood Cup (G3), Parx, 1 1/2 miles, 3-year-olds and up
Is this the free bingo square Saturday? Think back to last
year, when Next navigated the Parx slop to win this race by 25 lengths. Lest he
be branded as a hydrofoil, the 6-year-old gelding owned by Michael Foster and
trained by Doug Cowans won the 1 3/4-mile Birdstone last month by 22 1/4
lengths on a fast track at Saratoga. He has earned $1,228,361 in his career, he
has not lost in 16 months, and the average margin of victory during his current
six-race winning streak is 13.6 lengths. Ridin With Biden is back after winning
this race in 2022, but he was a very, very distant third in 2023. Next went off
at 3-10 odds last year. That might be an overlay this time.

Turf Monster (G3), Parx, 5 furlongs, turf, 3-year-olds
and up
Alogon won Aug. 24 in the Parx Dash, the prep race covering
the same course and distance as this one. His two closest pursuers were
nominated for the Turf Monster but were not expected to be in the entry box
Monday, according to the track racing office. Last month’s victory was the
first this year for the gelded, 5-year-old son of California Chrome who is
owned by Charles Matses and trained by Edward Allard. Alogon tested some deep water in June when he finished ninth of 12 in the Jaipur (G1) during Belmont Stakes week at Saratoga. Boat’s a Rockin, who
finished fourth in the Parx Dash, is probable to be back this weekend.

Princess Rooney Invitational (G3), Gulfstream Park, 7
furlongs, fillies and mares, 3 and up, Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint
automatic qualifier
Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has taken Soul of An Angel to the
next level. Before C2 Racing Stable and Agave Racing Stable bought her
privately this spring, the 5-year-old Atreides mare never was much more than a minor
stakes winner. In her first race for Joseph, she finished first in the Ruffian
(G2) on May 4 during the Belmont at Aqueduct meet. That was her first time
winning a graded stakes after nine previous losses. Soul of An Angel has had
more ambitious tests since, finishing fifth in the Ogden Phipps (G1), second in
the Molly Pitcher (G3) and third last month in the Personal Ensign (G1).

A two-time Group 1 winner and division champion in her
native Argentina late last year, 4-year-old Edict takes her talents to New York
to make her U.S. debut and her first start since December. Since John Behrendt bought
Edict and shipped her north, trainer David Donk has made her a regular on the New York Racing Association work tab all summer. Cutting back from 1 1/4 miles, she will carry the top
weight of 126 pounds in the field of nine plus two main-track-only entrants. Six-time
Noble Damsel-winning trainer Chad Brown has three entrants in the field.

My Mane Squeeze began her career with five wins in her first
eight races, most recently the seven-furlong Eight Belles (G2) on the Kentucky
Oaks undercard. The Audible filly owned by William Butler and WinStar Farm and
trained by Mike Maker graduated since to Grade 1 company, finishing fourth in the 1
1/8-mile Acorn and third in the seven-furlong Test. In last month’s seven-furlong
Charles Town Oaks (G2) she was a distant second to Mystic Lake. Manama Gold,
who won the UAE Oaks (G3) in February at Meydan, is the only other graded or
group winner in the field.
