The long-awaited return of short-priced Kentucky Derby 2025 futures
choice Barnes is expected to highlight a stacked weekend of graded stakes and
points preps at three tracks across the country.
Barnes, the 2-for-2 Bob Baffert-trained colt who is the 9-1 second choice at Caesars Sportsbook Nevada, was listed as probable by the Santa Anita
racing office Sunday to come back from eight weeks off. With entries being taken Monday, he is likely to be a
heavy favorite trying two turns for the first time in Saturday’s Grade 2 San
Felipe Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile points prep for the Derby.
The Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park and the Gotham
(G3) at Aqueduct also are worth 50 Derby points to each winner. Those should be
enough to get to the 20-horse gate May 3 at Churchill Downs.
The Santa Anita Handicap (G1) will be the feature Saturday in
California. The Gotham is one of the three graded stakes carded in New York. The
day will be dominated by eight added-money races in Florida.
Saturday

Burnham Square comes back to the scene of his Feb. 1 Holy
Bull (G3) triumph and carries hopes for a third consecutive win, all since
trainer Ian Wilkes added blinkers. Four-time Fountain of Youth-winning trainer
Todd Pletcher entered 2-for-2 Thames River and Swale victor Gate to Wire, both
of whom are trying two turns for the first time. Sovereignty has had nearly
four months off since he broke his maiden with a five-length win in the Street
Sense (G3) at Churchill Downs. There have been 14 Fountain of Youth graduates
who won the Kentucky Derby, including Mage in 2023.

It took her four tries to break her maiden, but La Cara has
made up for lost races since. She got the Oaks prep calendar started with a
three-quarter-length score in the Pocahontas (G3) in September at Churchill
Downs. Trainer Mark Casse gave Tracy Farmer’s homebred daughter of Street Sense
a three-month break after a distant fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies. She came back with a 6 1/4-length tour de force only 16 days ago in
the Suncoast at Tampa Bay Downs.

Mindframe kept impressive company as a 3-year-old, finishing
a close second to Dornoch in both the Belmont Stakes and the Haskell (G1). Then
he went on a seven-month break. The Constitution colt who is 4: 2-2-0 for
Pletcher and owners Mike Repole and Vinnie Viola jumps back into the mix
against older horses like Grade 3-winning 4-year-old Encino. The Godolphin
homebred colt by Nyquist returned last month from his own nine-month layoff to get
his fourth win in a row for trainer Brad Cox.

Mac Diarmida (G2), Gulfstream Park, 1 3/8 miles, turf,
4-year-olds and up
Dashman and Cash Equity set themselves up for Saturday’s finale
on the 14-race card by finishing one-two in the 1 1/2-mile W.L. McKnight (G3) last
month on the Pegasus World Cup undercard. Dashman, a 4-year-old Oscar
Performance colt trained by Brian Lynch, will start from the widest post in the
12-horse field just as he did in the McKnight. Cash Equity made up more than
nine lengths to miss by just a nose that day. Instead of post 11, the
7-year-old gelding trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. drew better, getting the 5 hole
for the Mac Diarmida.

That snapped the 6-year-old mare out of her bout with second-itis under the

nose in the 1 1/2-mile Dowager (G3) at Keeneland, a length in the 1 3/8-mile Red

month in a one-mile allowance race.

Derby 50-25-15-10-5 points race
Sand Devil and Sacrosanct bring undefeated records and
stakes victories into this last of the one-turn points preps for the Kentucky
Derby. Trained by Linda Rice, Sand Devil made it to 3-for-3 on Feb. 8 when he
escaped by a neck in the seven-furlong Damon Runyon at Aqueduct. That performance
merited a 93 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily Racing Form. Brad
Cox trains 4-for-4 Sacrosanct, who won by a head last out Dec. 14 in the New
York Stallion Series Great White Way. This will be his first time racing in an
unrestricted stakes.

Santa Anita Handicap (G1), Santa Anita, 1 1/4 miles, 4-year-olds
and up
The mere presence of Grade 1 winner Locked is a throwback to
when this race was the biggest deal for older handicap horses across the
country. The Saudi Cup (G1) and Dubai World Cup (G1) have big-footed the Big ’Cap
in recent years. Owners Aron Wellman and Gary Broad bucked that trend when they
decided not to go to the $20 million Saudi Cup and, instead, go west to this $300,000
race. Their 4-year-old Gun Runner colt overcame a dawdling start to finish
second last month in the Pegasus World Cup, lifting his career record to 7:
4-1-2 and his earnings to $1,481,650. Locked and five-time graded-stakes winner Hit Show, who finished first last month in the Louisiana (G3), have been assigned the top weight of 124 pounds.

Stalking was how he put together a three-race winning streak climaxed by the
Hollywood Derby (G1) at Del Mar to finish his 2024. Trainer Michael McCarthy is
expected to cut Formidable Man back to a mile Saturday against the likes of 6-year-old
El Potente, who is 2-for-2 this year with a last-out triumph in the one-mile Thunder
Ridge (G3) at Santa Anita.

San Felipe (G2), Santa Anita, 1 1/16 miles, 3-year-olds,
Kentucky Derby 50-25-15-10-5 points race
Barnes is not the only would-be San Felipe starter who has former Kentucky Derby futures favorite on his résumé. Journalism was the top
winter-book choice in Las Vegas after he won the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2)
last out in December for McCarthy. Rodríguez, Barnes’s stablemate from the Baffert
barn, also is probable after he finished second Feb. 1 in the Robert B. Lewis
(G3). He lost to Citizen Bull, a Baffert colt who will not be in this race but has shortened into the 8-1 Derby favorite in Las Vegas. The
San Felipe has produced 13 Derby winners. Authentic was the last one to do it
when he won both races in the pandemic year 2020.

Buena Vista (G2), Santa Anita, 1 mile, turf, fillies and
mares, 4-year-olds and up
With Rashmi and Liguria considered probable and Mahina
possible, this shapes up as a potential rematch of the top three from the Feb.
1 Megahertz (G3) over the same mile of grass. Four-year-old Rashmi lurked just
off the pace before she pounced turning for home in a 2 1/2-length triumph that
was her fourth win in her last six starts. Five-year-old Mahina overcame a
bumpy start and conceded 6 1/2 lengths of ground before closing to place
second. Also 5, Liguria saved ground and made a modest rally to take third.

Santa Ysabel (G3), Santa Anita, 1 1/16 miles, 3-year-old
fillies, Kentucky Oaks 50-25-15-10-5 points race
Tenma not only is expected to be in this race, she reckons
to be favored for the second start in a row. The Nyquist filly trained by
Baffert is 4-for-5 with her one loss being a troubled third in the October
running of the Oak Leaf (G2). Wins in the Starlet (G2) at Los Alamitos and the
Las Virgenes (G3) going a mile at Santa Anita followed. The big question here is
whether the race gets at least six starters. If not, the points rewards will be
reduced significantly under a new rule written by Churchill Downs.
