SAVANNAH, Ga. – Longwood men’s golf picked up a tournament win in their first tournament of the spring at The Savannah Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The Lancers led heading into the final round after battling rain in the opening two rounds on Saturday, and Longwood played five to six holes on Sunday morning before weather conditions forced the cancellation of the final round.
Justin LaRue earned co-medalist honors after tying for first after 36 holes, and the Lancers ended with a 282-276—558 (-18), the second-best raw 36-hole score in team history. Longwood finished three shots ahead of USC Beaufort.
“We all wish that we could have gotten the final round in,” said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. “It’s fantastic to win, but nobody wants to do it this way. I truly believe the other teams that were in contention deserved the opportunity to try to chase us down. As a coach, I also would have liked to see how we handled tings over the full 18 holes.”
For LaRue, it marks the third straight tournament he has either won outright or tied for first. He finished with back-to-back rounds under par.
