Aron Baynes officially retired from the NBA on Wednesday.
“The boy from Mareeba! Representing you for your entire career has been the honor of a lifetime,” Baynes’ agent, Daniel Moldovan, posted to social media. “You embody everything we teach young athletes about professionalism, dedication and playing for the name on the front of the jersey, not on the back. Love you Azza! All the very best in retirement”
Baynes spent two of his nine NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics and also spent time with the San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors. The 6-foot-10 center hasn’t played in an NBA game since the 2020-21 season.
During the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 while representing Australia, Baynes suffered a spinal cord injury that derailed his career. Two scary falls left him unable to walk. An MRI discovered Baynes had internal bleeding which was putting pressure on his spinal cord. Baynes made a full recovery and returned to basketball and played for the Brisbane Bullets in Australia’s NBL the last two seasons.
Baynes helped bring the Celtics to the Eastern Conference Finals during the 2017-18 season. In two years with Boston, the big man averaged 5.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 0.6 blocks.
A 2013-14 NBA champion with the Spurs, Baynes finishes his NBA career with 522 games.
