ESPN has found a replacement for Sam Ponder on “Sunday NFL Countdown.” It’s a familiar face, and one that’s not well liked by Miami Dolphins fans.
Mike Greenberg is reportedly taking over the job of hosting ESPN’s weekly NFL pregame show, according to The Athletic. The post became open after ESPN fired Ponder, who had hosted the show since the legendary Chris Berman stepped down in 2017. Ponder and Robert Griffin III, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner who worked as a college football and NFL analyst, were let go last week because of budget cuts.
Greenberg is all over ESPN properties. His “Greeny” radio show replaced the long-running “Mike and Mike” with Mike Golic. He hosts “Get Up” each morning on ESPN and anchors the network’s NFL Draft coverage. Until last season, he also led the network’s NBA studio coverage.
The biggest change Greenberg will bring to the show? His ardent fandom of the New York Jets.
The Dolphins‘ AFC East rivals have been the focus of attention ever since Aaron Rodgers arrived last year. He only played four snaps in 2023 before tearing his Achilles tendon and missing the rest of the season. His return makes the Jets a popular playoff pick, even in a competitive division that includes the Dolphins, with Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill leading an explosive offense, and the Buffalo Bills, who have won the AFC East the past four seasons behind Josh Allen.
And now the Jets’ most visible fan will be leading two hours of coverage on “the Worldwide Leader in Sports” every Sunday. Let’s check in on some of Greeny’s measured takes regarding the Jets:
Not everyone was pleased to hear the news of Greenberg taking over hosting duties. Here’s a look at some fan’s reactions on social media:
