Emma Raducanu has received a wildcard into next week’s WTA 1000 event in Doha. It will be her third consecutive week of competition.
The British No. 2 is currently on a three-match losing streak. She suffered first-round exits in Abu Dhabi and Singapore after her third-round showing at the Australian Open.
While Raducanu has been struggling to win matches, her decision to head to Doha and keep playing proves she is sticking to her guns when it comes to her big aim for the 2025 season.
In her young career, Raducanu has struggled to compete consistently on the relentless tennis tour. Injuries have often been to blame for the 22-year-old’s frequent spells of breaks from the circuit.
Last year alone, Raducanu only played 13 tournament and two Billie Jean King Cup ties. In 2024, she seemed keen to put in the hours on the practice court to fine-tune both her game and her body instead of getting matches under her belt.
But that has changed for the 2025 season. At the end of last year, the world No. 56 “I want to play more than I did this year.
“I think now, with my set-up, I’m in a place where I can continue work on the road. So I don’t necessarily need to come back to continue good physical work.”
There was a slight setback when Raducanu was forced to skip her first event of the season – the ASB Classic – as she recovered from a back niggle. But the former world No. 10 has since been committed to entering as many tournaments as possible.
Less then 10 days after she lost to world No. 2 Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open, Raducanu was back on court at the Singapore Tennis Open. She lost a heartbreaking three-hour three-setter to Cristina Bucsa.
Despite the disappointing result, Raducanu took action to enter another competition as soon as possible. She took a qualifying wildcard into the Abu Dhabi Open but this was later upgraded to a main-draw wildcard.
It was another short stay for the Brit, who lost to 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the first round. But Raducanu is happy to get back on the horse again next week.
The Qatar Open in Doha will mark the third week in a row that Raducanu has competed on the WTA Tour.
While the results haven’t been what she would have liked so far, she is at least proving her commitment to playing more matches.
Retired British player Tim Henman has already been encouraged by Raducanu’s decision to quickly enter more events after suffering early losses.
“If she keeps the number of tournaments that she can competes in up and stays healthy, I’m convinced that the results will follow,” he said last week.
