Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer’s program will no longer allow players to show less than 100% buy-in. Upperclassman OL Roq Montgomery shared as much in a message designed to build hype for the program’s 2025 season.
It may have done the opposite instead, though.
By admitting there’s a policy this offseason to root out several behavioral issues, Montgomery revealed how far the “Bama Standard” has fallen since Nick Saban’s sudden retirement last January.
“The message right now from me and my teammates, just our entire staff, is we got a different outlook on everything,” Montgomery told The Bama Standard podcast last week, per Bama247. “It’s not like we ain’t never been serious about anything, because there’s things that we do, but we just got to get back to the old days — to when Bama does nothing but win, and win championships. That’s the main focus right now.
“You can’t be late to workouts no more. No more jewelry. No more necklaces. None of that. It’s not a fashion show. It’s football.”
Auburn and Tennessee fans are rejoicing to hear this. Those within the Alabama fanbase who never believed in DeBoer are vindicated for their skepticism. What Saban was able to accomplish is already aging well.
DeBoer has been caught red-handed. Does Ryan Grubb instantaneously change this culture? It’s unclear.
But the cultural issues in Tuscaloosa are real. And that’s on DeBoer to fix it as soon as he humanly could. His Crimson Tide tenure depends on it.
