The five-year, $255 million contract Jalen Hurts inked with the Philadelphia Eagles in April 2023 came at a price.
One of the contract’s stipulations is that the Eagles quarterback cannot golf.
Hurts told reporters about the clause after joining running back Saquon Barkley and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie on Wednesday for a round of golf with former president Barack Obama.

“To see him out there enjoying himself and talking a little trash, that was cool,” Hurts said about playing with the former president, per Martin Frank of the Delaware News Journal. “I told him he didn’t want these problems just yet. I can’t golf right now. By contract, I can’t golf. His day will come.”
The comment comes after Hurts told reporters in August that he was “told not to golf by Mr. Lurie.”
The round of golf, which took place at Merion Golf Club outside of Philadelphia, comes amid a three-game winning streak for the Eagles. Hurts and his teammates are now looking to extend that streak to four straight wins on Sunday with a Week 9 victory over the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars.
Hurts originally told reporters that he had picked up tennis this summer in part because of his restriction regarding golf.
When a reporter followed up on that comment on Wednesday, Hurts answered that “it’s still not the time to tell the story,” but confirmed that the restriction was in his contract.
Whatever clause is in Hurts’ contract apparently didn’t make it into the three-year, $37.75 million deal Barkley signed with the Eagles after leaving the New York Giants in free agency. The running back called the golf outing “one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had in my life.”

Hurts had shown some public interest in golfing before the new deal. The quarterback shared some videos of himself practicing his swing on social media in February of 2023.
The Eagles know their hopes of returning to the Super Bowl for the first time since their 2023 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs hinge on Hurts. Lurie apparently isn’t willing to have Hurts take any chances with his health by continuing to work on his swing.
Hurts has passed for four touchdowns and rushed for five more on the ground during the win streak coming out of Philadelphia’s Week 5 bye. The Eagles will hope for another big outing from Hurts on Sunday as they look to challenge the 6-2 Dallas Cowboys for the top of the NFC East.
