How a weight room renovation at Duke University is improving the student experience.
Duke University has unveiled the newly renovated Wilson Weight Room at Wilson Recreation Center, designed to improve functionality, accommodate modern fitness trends and enhance the student experience. The 11,000-square-foot weight room renovation involved replacing all equipment, reconfiguring the space for better flow, and incorporating elements that reinforce Duke Recreation & Physical Education’s commitment to excellence.
After evaluating the weight room’s layout and aging equipment — being approximately 13 years old — the team determined it was time for a complete overhaul. What began as a plan to replace dumbbells and bumper plates quickly evolved into a full-scale weight room renovation.
“We knew we were due for an equipment replacement soon,” explained Chris Policastro, the managing director of Recreation Facilities. “After we spent time analyzing the function of the space and how people used it, we knew we should rearrange the layout. We did so to optimize empty space and reduce congested areas.”
One of the most significant upgrades was the installation of nine connected power racks with various attachments, providing a versatile training space for students. To accommodate barbell exercises, additional flooring was added, and customized Duke Recreation and Physical Education logos now outline designated deadlifting areas.
The renovation also included:
The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive. To celebrate the grand reopening, the department hosted an event featuring Felicia Tittle, the executive director of Recreation & Physical Education, as a live DJ, free food and a T-shirt giveaway.
Beyond daily student use, the new space benefits multiple areas within Duke Recreation & Physical Education. For example, Physical Education instructors can now run classes in the weight room and the fitness team has expanded personal training services.
Another area staff plan to reap the benefits of the weight room renovation is in programming. Already, a powerlifting competition is scheduled for April to showcase the space’s new capabilities.
“The weight room is now a showcase piece of the Wilson Recreation Center and improves the overall student experience at Duke,” said Policastro. “It highlights our department’s commitment to excellence.”
To ensure the weight room met the high standards needed to serve students, there were many things Duke staff had to keep in mind. Their advice includes:
The weight room renovation at Duke University exemplifies how thoughtful facility design can enhance both the student experience and department programming. By modernizing the space and responding to evolving fitness trends, Duke Recreation & Physical Education has set a new standard for campus fitness facilities.
