Drugmaker Eisai will cut 57 jobs at North Jersey headquarters

The Japanese drugmaker will lay off 57 employees this spring, according to a public notice.
The company’s U.S. headquarters are in the ON3 complex in Nutley and Clifton.

Japanese drugmaker Eisai Inc. will lay off 57 employees in Nutley between the end of March and May, public records show, as the pharmaceutical company shaves off 7% of its U.S workforce.

The New Jersey employees being let go are all based out of Eisai’s U.S headquarters at the ON3 campus that straddles the border between Nutley and Clifton. Just off Route 3 the property previously housed pharmaceutical giant Hoffmann-La Roche.

The Tokyo-based company announced the move in a layoff notice filed with the state Department of Labor.

All told, Eisai is letting go of 121 U.S employees, trade publication BioSpace reported.

In an emailed statement, Eisai spokesperson Christopher Vancheri said the cuts are “part of our strategy to improve operations and ensure long-term sustainability.”

The firm has 10,000 employees globally, but Vancheri did not immediately answer questions on the number of U.S and New Jersey staff. In August 2022, Eisai said it would bring 800 employees to the Nutley campus, with the ability to eventually accommodate up to 1,300.

According to its website, Eisai develops drugs for neurology and oncology.

In January, the U.S Food and Drug Administration approved Leqembi, an Alzheimer’s drug treatment jointly developed by Eisai and biotechnology company Biogen.

In addition to its Nutley headquarters, Eisai also has a genetics research center in Cambridge, Massachusetts; a research and development campus in Exton, Pennsylvania; a logistics hub in Raleigh, North Carolina; and a manufacturing and logistics center in Baltimore, Maryland, according to its website.

“Eisai remains fully committed to the U.S. market and will continue to serve the needs of patients and their families, particularly in addressing unmet medical needs in areas such as cancer, Alzheimer’s diseas, and other neurological conditions,” said Vancheri, the company spokesperson.
