PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Player Director Adam Scott met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday to discuss efforts to reach an agreement between the Tour and the LIV Golf League — which the President has offered to broker in the past.
“We know golf fans are eagerly anticipating a resolution to negotiations with the Public Investment Fund and want to thank President Trump for his interest and long-time support of the game of golf,” the Tour said in a statement released on Thursday. “We asked the President to get involved for the good of the game, the good of the country, and for all the countries involved. We are grateful that his leadership has brought us closer to a final deal, paving the way for reunification of men’s professional golf.”
LIV Golf was formed in 2022 and is backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. It lured some of the game’s top stars such as Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and 2022 Players champion Cameron Smith with guaranteed contracts and $25 million purses per event, with 54-hole tournaments and a team structure.
After a nearly one-year court battle, the Tour and LIV Golf announced in June 2023 that they wanted to form a partnership. The partnership has yet to materialize, and the only accomplishment was ending the expensive legal wars, with both sides dropping their suits and countersuits.
On Jan. 31, 2024, the PGA Tour announced a deal with the Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of pro team sports owners, to infuse $3 billion into the formation of PGA Tour Enterprises. Tour members will be equity partners based on career accomplishments.
The President has hosted LIV events at golf courses he owns in New Jersey, Virginia, and Miami and frequently played in its pro-ams. However, last year, he also indicated that he wanted to help the two sides come together and said he could complete a deal “in 15 minutes.”
Monahan and the President played golf at Trump National in West Palm Beach on Nov. 5, 2024, less than two weeks after the election.
“I’m really going to work on other things, to be honest with you,” President Trump said on a podcast last fall.”I think we have much bigger problems than that. But I do think we should have one tour, and they should have the best players in the world.”
