President Donald Trump‘s golfing habits have once again come under scrutiny as he was seen playing golf one week into his second term. Taking time off to hit the links at Trump National Doral in Miami, Trump finds himself at the center of criticism due to his hectic schedule packed with executive orders.
The President has long been associated with golf, a passion of his well before he stepped into politics. Since 1999, Trump has been acquiring and building golf courses, and as of the time of writing, he owns 15 courses around the world consisting of 11 in the USA, three in Europe, and one in the UAE.
Throughout his first term from 2017 to 2021, Trump faced continuous criticism for his frequent golf trips. A report from CNN highlighted that during this time, he visited his golf courses 92 times – although it must be noted that the media outlet wasn’t abe to confirm he was playing golf during these visits.
These criticisms seem to be resurfacing as Trump was quick to visit the course once more on Monday, just a week after his recent inauguration.
Betsy Klein reported Trump was asked onboard Air Force One if he would have time to play golf: “No. I don’t think so. I’m busy,” he reportedly replied.
Adding fuel to the fire, Fox News correspondent Aishah Hasnie captured images of Trump enjoying the sport, directly contradicting his previous statements on the matter. The news has prompted reactions on social media, with many offering their take on his actions. Some criticized him for taking leisure so early in his term, while others took a humorous approach to comment on the situation.
A person on X (formerly Twitter) responded to the news:
“Imagine any of us starting a job and taking the first Monday off to golf.”

Someone else jested in response: “He’s been at it for a week now. Give him a break!”

However, these actions have not come without ethical concerns. Watchdog group Citizens for Ethics expressed discontent, suggesting that Trump’s golf outings are at the taxpayers’ expense, a sentiment echoed by others on social media.
Scott Dworkin posted: “BREAKING: Video of Trump golfing right now at his DC golf club. Trump took another vacation day so he could promote a golf course he owns, on the American taxpayer’s dime. This is pure corruption, and more proof Trump’s the laziest mobster on the planet.”

Art Candee posted: “Donald Trump is hard at work at his Doral golf club where Republican members of the House are using taxpayer funds to visit.”
Citizens for Ethics posted: “It took President Trump all the way to the first full Monday in office to spend the morning golfing at one of his Trump-branded golf courses.”

On the other hand, some of Trump’s supporters stand by the president, claiming that he remains productive even while golfing.

Trump’s use of golf as a diplomatic tool is hardly a new practice. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, White House press secretary during his first term, often defended Trump’s time on the golf course, pointing out that it was spent fostering vital relationships with members of Congress.
“I think it would certainly be developing deeper and better relationships with members of Congress in which those relationships have helped push forward the president’s agenda ― specifically when it comes to helping get the tax reform and tax cuts passed,” Huckabee Sanders admitted at the time. “He has played golf with a number of senators and used that time certainly to accomplish that.”
On a side note, Trump’s re-election has opened discussions about how his continued golfing ties might impact negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, which remain a substantial topic in the world of golf.
