Jaelan Phillips’ season is over.
The Miami Dolphins edge rusher announced on social media on Wednesday that he will need reconstructive surgery on his knee after he went down in their loss to the Tennessee Titans on Monday.
“I believe that our lives are defined by how we handle adversity,” Phillips wrote, in part. “In these moments of uncertainty, defeat and sorrow, it is natural to question your purpose and wonder what is the meaning of this pain. I know that my purpose is to inspire people to never give up, no matter how many times you get knocked down … The mission is still the mission. I have unfinished business to take care of and I will come out of this trial victorious.”
Phillips injured his right knee in the second quarter of their 31-12 loss to the Titans, and left for the medical tent. He returned to the game briefly, but he went down again in the third quarter with the same injury.
Phillips then left for the locker room and was ruled out the rest of the way. He left the stadium in a knee brace, and his season is now over.
Phillips had six total tackles and a sack in four games this season, his fourth with the Dolphins. The 25-year-old, who the Dolphins took with the No. 18 overall pick out of Miami in 2021, had 43 total tackles and 6.5 sacks last season before he ruptured his Achilles in November. Phillips has one year left on his initial rookie deal with the Dolphins, and he’s set to make $13.2 million next season.
Phillips is the latest Dolphins player dealing with an injury this season. The team has dropped to just 1-3 on the year after both starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and backup Skylar Thompson both went down with injuries. Tagovailoa is on injured reserve recovering from a concussion. That’s left third-string Tyler Huntley to lead the offense, which has largely struggled.
The Dolphins will take on the New England Patriots next weekend in Massachusetts.
